MSPCA has a number of programs that help animal owners take care of their pets. Some of the programs offer financial assistance to pet owners who have fallen into financial difficulty and are unable to care for their animals. An example is the equine assistance program.
Established in response to the high number of people who are surrendering their horses, the equine assistance program provides temporary help to horse owners in financial need. Horse owners apply to the program by downloading an application form, filling it out, and sending it to the MSPCA barn staff.
MSPCA representatives then contact the horse owner to request more information and later visit the farm to see the horse. A veterinarian is consulted when appropriate.
MSPCA gives aid in the form of reduced prices for hay and feed and assistance with veterinary and farrier costs. In some cases, full care of the horse is granted. Preference is given to people with a record of responsible equine care. The entire program is funded by donations.
